Susan sat quietly, as she continued to review all her notes and her questions concerning the trial that was scheduled to begin in about two hours. .

She put her pen down and leaned back in her chair. Thoughts concerning Dorothy Longmire had consumed her since Dorothy had left her office yesterday. She felt sorry for her—she felt guilty for doing as well as she had financially, while Dorothy was struggling. Susan was well aware she could do nothing for Dorothy in the long term. She was equally concerned that providing her with money yesterday might well have been the worst thing she could have done.

Dorothy needed to figure out a long-term solution, and quit using other people as a band-aid for her problem. Maybe she should call her and explain that she really needed to see a financial adviser. If she would go, Susan would pay the bill. She had a feeling however, that Dorothy would never expend any energy to solve the problem in that manner. She would, more than likely, prefer to accept donations from people and just tread water day-by-day. Maybe when she had a little more time, she would make an effort to discuss her thoughts with Dorothy and see how she responded.

Today, however, was not the day for figuring out Dorothy and what she did and didn’t need. Today was the day for putting Mr. Hepner behind bars.

They had picked a jury and quickly concluded both parties opening comments. Because of Teresa Wisner’s lack of experience, almost all jurors whose names were initially called, were allowed to serve. There were a number of potential jurors that Susan would have stricken because they clearly did not appear to favor the defendant. But Teresa was a rookie, and she made more than one mistake while selecting the jury. Susan figured it wouldn’t hurt to discuss those mistakes with Teresa once the trial was over—just one attorney with a lot of experience, helping out another with no experience. Someone with plenty of experience had helped her when she first began: she would pass along the favor.

During the noon break, she quickly consumed a sandwich from the small sandwich shop next door, then hurried back to the conference room where she was to meet George Black and briefly touch upon his testimony. They had been through it a couple of times prior to today, but they would quickly discuss any questions he might have concerning the procedure or his testimony, before she called him as her first witness of any substance.

Soon after they started the discussion, there was a knock on the door indicating it was time for them to be seated and start the day’s proceedings.

The first couple of witnesses testified as to their ownership position with Carver Electronics, the store that was robbed. The witnesses explained the specifics of the operation of the business on a day-by-day basis, including opening hours, continuous video filming within the business and the overnight holding of cash within the store.
